The Sappony

The Sappony are an even smaller tribe living at the border of Virginia and North Carolina (Sappony, 2014b). They only have 850 members, and most of their community is in Virginia. However, they are still state-recognized in both states (Sappony, 2014c). They are especially proud of their heritage in helping form the Virginia-North Carolina border when a European named William Byrd visited and worked with them (Sappony, 2014c). They are a small close-knit population that is very involved in church (Sappony, 2014b).

This map shows the area where the Sappony tribe is located. (Sappony, 2014b)
