
The Haliwa-Saponi
The Haliwa-Saponi is the third largest tribe in North Carolina. They are made up of 4,300 members, 2,700 of which live in the immediate tribal community (Haliwa-Saponi, 2014). A tribal council also governs the Haliwa-Saponi (Haliwa-Saponi, 2014). There are 11 elected members (Haliwa-Saponi, 2014). Their community government is also made up of a Chief, Vice Chief, Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer (Haliwa-Saponi, 2014). The NC Arts Council and the NC Department of Labor Indians Native American Programs office fund their many community events (Haliwa-Saponi, 2014). These include enrichment, family, and health programs along with a Red Earth Culture Class (Haliwa-Saponi, 2014. This class teaches more about the Native Americans of North Carolina and the history and culture of the Haliwa-Saponi (Haliwa-Saponi, 2014).
