The Occaneechi are a band of the Saponi nation different from the Haliwa (Occaneechi band of the Saponi nation, 2014). They currently live in Alamance, Caswell, and Orange counties (Occaneechi band of the Saponi, 2014). They are one of the smaller tribes, having only 1100 members (Occaneechi band of the Saponi nation, 2014). Although they are Saponi, they are also descended from several small Siouan tribes (Occaneechi band of the Saponi nation, 2014).
